Johnson's laws and reconstruction plan

Andrew Johnson gave pardon to the Confederates, he restored the state governments, and the white leaders of the governments he restored passed laws that severely restricted African Americans newfound freedoms. And those laws were known as the black codes.

Black men and women had a curfew which states that they can not gather after sunset. They also had vagrancy laws which says that freedmen that are convicted of vagrancy would be fined, whipped, or sold for a years labor.Labor contracts states that freedmen have to sign a contract from January for a year of work, and they couldn't drop in the middle because if they did they would give all the wages they have earned. There were also land restriction, which says that freedmen would be able to rent a land or home only in rural areas. They were sort of forced to live in plantation.

The Congress created the 14Th Amendment which made all citizens of the United States would not be able to enforce or make any law which abridges the privileges (immunities) of citizens of the United States; no State can deprive anyone of life, liberty, or property without its jurisdiction equal protection of the law.
The 15Th Amendment states that it is possible for any black men or women to participate in an election for presidency.

Radical Reconstruction were small in group but increasingly influential. Republican thought of themselves as moderates.
Moderates and Radicals both opposed/disagreed with Johnson's Reconstruction policies. They also opposed the spread of the black codes and favored the spread/expansion of the Republican Party in the South. Though moderates did not really want to grant the African Americans civil rights such as voting rights and equal treatment.

Carpetbaggers are Northern Republicans who moved to the postwar South. This insulting nickname was given by the Southern; it was referred to the cheap suitcase they had made of carpet scraps. They were said to be greedy men who were seeking to grab/take power. Though historians say that they were honest and educated men.

Scalawags: In the postwar South, they thought that to be white and a southerner and a Republican was seen as a traitor. Southerners had a nickname for those white southern Republican. The word scalawags means "scrawny cattle" (Scottish) some of these scalawags were former Whigs who opposed secession.

After the Civil War

Both the South and North had damages that they had to take care of. The South had many farms burned down and houses ruined. Their life stock and crops were burned and gone. Slaves now looked for jobs and old slave owner weren't able to give them a jobs because they practically ran out of money. Many people in the south were dead (260 million).
The North won the war but lost MANY people (364 million) since the battles happened in the south many men had to transport their food and things they needed such as weapons. Unfortunately this was harder for the northern soldiers and so this is why they have lost more men than the southern. The North did not damage their buildings and industries as much as the South did because as i said before most battles happened in the Southern territories.
Railroads, canals, live stocks, and many things have gone away with the war. It would take a lot of time to rebuild all of that and all the industries and school they have lost.

The war created much more damage than just destroying things. The currency dropped really low. People did not have a lot of many at all, practically none at all. People were looking for jobs, mostly black people who were slaves before and need many to eat and survive.
Since the war was lost for the Southerners, most of them blamed the black people for that. (Not supported fact but an analysis) : they probably were beaten down or insulted and racism was happening more often then it used to because they thought the black were the cause of this war and the lose of all the things they really needed.

After Lincoln's death, Andrew Johnson was the next president because he was the vice president before Abraham Lincoln's death.
Johnson pardoned the south who now joined the union again. He gave permission to each state to hold a constitutional convention, but didn't put the 10 percent allegiance requirement Lincoln was going to put. Johnson was more generous to the south though he reflected the spirit of Lincoln's 10 percent plan. He denied the pardon for the Confederate leaders.

John Brown

John Brown was an American abolitionist. He was an anti-slave and wanted to end all slavery. In 1856 he led the Potawatomie Massacre in Kansas which was then called 'Bleeding Kansas'.

Abraham Lincoln said the John Brown was a "misguided fanatic" from that people called him "the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans".
Brown was someone that demanded violent action to fight for no slavery. While other Northerners wanted to peaceful resistance.

John Brown had a major role in the starting of the Civil War. He became known to be heroic martyr and a visionary. Sometimes he was thought to be a madman and a terrorist.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a anti-slave novel. This novel was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. This book was published in 1852.
This novel gives a slaves perspective of life and how they are being treated. It shows how hard they work and how hard it is to live a life.
The main character of this novel is Uncle Tom and he is a slave.
This book was the best selling book in the 19th century. It was the best selling book after the Bible.

When Lincoln meets Stowe before the civil war starts he says "So this is the little lady who made this big war."

The terrible effect of war

When war is happening innocent children and women are being killed. These women and children can start migrating but unfortunately they might not have enough money or they are stuck. These innocent people are being killed while they haven't done anything wrong.
Many natural environments such as farms are being burned and destroyed. War also creates a human migration so the population changes. If the population decreases not many people are going to have a job in that certain place and so the economy is going to decrease. Population doesn't only change because the population is scared of the war but also because they are being killed. Wars happen to kill not only human population but animal population too. This decrease of population can create an extinction of an animal kind.

Slaves and their lives

Slaves were not sold as families but sent separately to different owners. Children were sometimes sent away from their mother, brother, father, alone to a place they don't know at all. This must be the case to prevent the slaves to plan an escape and to not know where they are. This would be an advantage for the slave owners.
The black were not allowed to receive education. one reason would be because they were thought as people not smart (dumb). Another reason would be because they could outsmart their owners and so escape easily.
Free slaves were not always free. They would sometimes be captured and put as slaves again. Unfortunately they were never really free.
Slaves would slow work habits, break tools, or steal food to be able to mess up the owners plantation and wealth.
Uncle Toms Cabin is a book written by Harriet Beeder Stowe. This book describe what a slave's life was like. How miserable and painful the work would be. The unfairness the slaves were facing everyday. This book scorned about slave owners too. People started reading this book (many people did). Some slave owners would say that the slaves they owned would live happily with them that they were treated equally. Wore the same things, ate the same food, treated the same way and etc. (nothing proved that this was the case for slaves).

Northern and Southern advantages and disadvantages...

Northern:
Since they created factories and many industries. Those industries would create manufactured materials such as sewing machines. People that did not own farms,so they looked for work. They went to work in factories and so the northern economy raised and its population raised too.Did not accept slavery, they thought people should be freeman.
Northern did not want annexation (for the same reasons) they did not want slave states to increase. South thought that the great and primary cause of the crisis would be that the North now had the exclusive power of controlling the Government because of north's large population (more voting more seats in the house).

Southern:
They had a better soil so a fertile land and crops were easier to grow.
Dependent on slavery because they have so much work and were used to have slaves that help them. Meaning that if slaves were illegal they would have problems growing their crops and the economy would shoot down. Southern and Democrats wanted the annexation because it would increase the number of slave states.

Who are some of the people who fought and worked hard for freedom?

Frederick Douglass was a black leader who presented the case to the public for freeing the slaves. He had a newspaper (his newspaper) called 'The North Star'.
Harriet Tubman born into slavery and she escpaped to become a fighter and fight for abolition and women's suffrage. She worked to help freedom so much and work so hard on the underground railroad that she became known as 'The Moses of Her People'.
William Lloyd Garrison is one of the most influential abolitionist leaders during the American Civil War. He argued for a freedom for people which were held in slavery.
These people all helped to fight against slavery. They all supported freedom and work hard for it to happen.

Did it relate to the Civil War?

The compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Presidential Election of 1860 were important events in history. These events were sort of steps to the Civil War.
These events were surrounding the idea of slavery, to have salves or not. People, meaning the Southern and Northern opposed each other which created a conflicted between the two. This conflict rose higher and higher until it reached a point that war started.

Presidential Election of 1860

Presidential Election of 1860 was focused on slavery. Battles happened over the spread of slavery to new territories such as Kansas. Abraham Lincoln who had given up on politics after an term in Congress in 1840s, returned to the politics arena. He started attacking the legislation and specifically its author, Senator Stephan A. Douglas.
Lincoln opposed Douglas when he ran for the reelection in 1858. Douglas and Lincoln had many debates which were mentioned in newspapers around the country.
Lincoln was invited to make a speech denouncing slavery and its spread. The speech was a success.
The presidential was held on November 6, 1860. Lincoln did well in the Northern States but he garnered less than 40 percent of the population vote. Lincoln won the landslide victory in the electoral college.
Lincoln did not carry any Southern states.
This election was important because this election was the most momentous in America. There were rumors of assassination before Lincoln got to the White House. He split the South with the Union. March 4, 1861 it was obvious that the nation was going to have war. The Civil War happened the next month.

Kansas.... free state??

The Kansas-Nebraska Act created in the U.S on May 30, 1854. This Act made it possible for people that lived in those territories to decided whether or not to allow slavery.
After this Act was passed pro-slavery and anti-slavery supporter went all to settle Kansas to make a deference in the outcome of the first election held there. Pro-slavery carried the election but they also were charged with fraud by the anti-slavery supporters/settlers and they did not accept the result of the election.
The anti-slavery settlers made another election, but the pro-slavery settler did not want to vote. Violence erupted because of the two opposing legislatures in the territories of Kansas. This violence erupted with the anti-slavery settlers which were lead by John Brown.
The territory soon got a nickname which was "bleeding Kansas".
Franklin Pierce who was supported by the pro-slavery settlers sent Federal troops to stop the violence and to disperse the anti-slavery legislature.
Then another election was done and the pro-slavery settlers won again, but they were charged again of fraud.
Finally Kansas was not allowed to become a state.
Anti-slavery settlers outnumbered pro-slavery settlers and a new constitution was drawn up.
January 29, 1861 (before the civil war) Kansas was admitted to the Union as a free state.

The Compromise of 1850

Henry Clay a U.S senator resolved a debate in 1820 about the spread of slavery. The U.S gained territory after the war they had with Mexico and they had to decide if those lands were going to be free or would those lands allow slavery, or the people living in those lands would chose themselves.
Clay, Daniel Webster (Senator from Massachusetts), and John C. Calhoun (senator from South Carolina) debated the idea of keeping slavery or not, debate the compromise. Stephan Douglas a democrate help by making a series bills that made up the compromise ushered through congress.
Texas would reliquich the land but in exchange they would give them $10 million (they'll use that money to pay the debts of Mexico).
The Fugitive Slave Act was the most contraversial. It says that citizens must assist to the recovery of fugitive slaves. Fugitives were not allowed to have a juge trial. Slaves who tried to make a living in the North was impossible and chaos with this act. Many slaves left and went to Canada. Colored people started moving in neighboring countries and people would capture black (colored) people and send them to the South. Those captured people had no right and so they were not able to defend themselves.
The Compromise of 1850 helped unite, it united the nations. Unfortunatly time passed by and people divided, this united the nations only for a while.

Morocco and its Economy

During the 1980s, early 21 century Morocco has faced problems of a developing country (reducing the constraints of private activities and trade, sustainable economy growth). There has also been some droughts in the agriculture sector. Which made it harder for growing crops. This drought contributed in a slowdown of economy in 1999.
Morocco predicted in the year 2000 there will be a growth of 6% because of the rainfalls which happened. Morocco then faced some challenges, some of those challenges were to improve education and attract foreign investments.

What could be non-negotiable?

Some things could be negotiable and other just can't and these are two examples of how some things can't be negotiable.

1 non-negotiable thing would be the way Islam and Christianity have different thoughts about if it is possible to eat pork or not. This can not be negotiable because no one can question their religion it just isn't negotiable.
Another non-negotiable thing would be if someone rapes someone else, there is no reason for doing such a thing and so it is not negotiable.

My opinion on why should one migrate.

Done as a inclass discussion:
I would migrate to Europe to have a good education (finish my studies) and also because of the clean enviroment, which is something important after all.
When i finish my university studies i would stay in Morocco because my religion is welcome in this country. My family my friends are going to be there too and i will enjoy seeing them again. Another important fact which many people think of living in Morocco because of this, is that in Morocco things aren't as expensive as in many other countries.

Not inclass discussion:
Some reasons i think people would mirate would be for more land. Land is an important human facture which represents a need for more space. People would migrate to get a fertile soil and again the human factures are involved soil, water (oceans, seas, etc!;), air (people might be sick or allergic to something in the air which might cause them to leave and migrate, or simply because of pollution).
If we think politically, some people might disagree with some laws and would migrate to find some laws which they can follow freely and accept.
And if we look at it socially, maybe poeple aren't repectful or don't welcome you or do things apart and you don't enjoy maybe you want to migrate and find people that aren't all those things.

The Different Kinds of Political Parties.

There are many different kinds of political parties in Morocco and some of them are:

Independence Party: There are nationalists views which were thought of or held strongly the Istiqlal was the main political force which was struggling for the independence of Morocco. If a specific territory which first belonged to Morocco was given back the independence won't be complete. This kind of political party may be chosen by any kind of people because the land of Morocco belongs to everyone in Morocco not only the rich or only the poor. People that live in Morocco will all fight for their country.

Socialist Union of Popular Forces: This political party was more social international and this meant poor people supported this political party more than any other class in the other social classes.

National Rally of Independents: This political party reseaved 41 out of 325 seats.

Socialist Union of Popular Forces: This politcal party was made as a breakaway for the UNFP. This party was later split into Istiqlal party.

Thomas Jefferson

America showed/proved that they can transfer power from party to party and do it peacefully. Jefferson knew that if it was not done peacefully than the administration would not succeed, or the nation survive. He stated at his inauguration:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
-Decleration of Independence

With Congress Jefferson reduced taxes and cut the size of the Federal bureaucracy (department, and workers that make up the Federal government. He changed the size of the army to just 3000 men.

John Adams

John Adams served as a leader during the American Revolution and served as a Vice President for 18 years. He faced difficulties because he ruled a new country 'young country'. It was also difficult because the parties grew wider and wider. He also had to deal with a threat of war from France. They threatened them because of Jay's Treaty with the British and began seizing American ships in French harbor.
To avoid war Adam sent officials to Paris (capital of France) to negotiate with the revolutionary government.

Jefferson and Hamilton

There were 2 ways of looking at the government and the human nature. Hamilton and Jefferson represented two ways of interpreting the Constitution.
There was the strict construction which Jefferson favored, he believed that the government should only use the implied powers of the Constitution if it is absolutly necessary. Apart from the strict Constitution there was the loose Constitution which Hamilton favored, he believed the government could use the implied power of the Constitution to do many things as long as they were not prohibited by the Constitution.
Jefferson had more faith in his people than he had in their government. He also thought Hamilton was someone betraying the ideals of the American Revolution.

Jefferson and the other states were promoting resistance to the Federalists in letters to one another. They were called Jeffersonian Republicans. Jefferson, those other states, and Federalists were the first political parties in United States.
-Political Parties- A group of people who seek to win elections and hold public office in order to control government policy and porgrams.

Legislative Power - Constitution and the Different Amendments

Legislative power:
To be able to pick who you want as a leader is ( for me ) a great idea. By the help of this it is possible for people to be fair and to be lead by someone who they think will make a good leader such as a leader that accepts other religion, culture, tradition. This is a characteristic which makes a good leader.

First Amendment (from the book Bill of Right) :
To have to believe in things is important, because everyone should have the right of believing what they want to believe in. For example if the leader believes in many gods and someone believes in one god, that person should have the right to keep that belief.

Second Amendment (from the book Bill of Right) :
This amendment says that people can own a fire arm. This is vital for some people because anything may happen. There maybe a killer who threatens to take the land and it, in this case, the farmer does not find anyway to protect himself he might die. Arm fires are very important for protection and everyone should have the right to protect themselves and if we take that arm fire away we are taking that right too.

Third Amendment (from the book Bill of Right) :
Soldier can not enter your house if you do not want to. When the government send soldiers to your home is like invading your private place. People should have the right to have their own private property/space and they , and only they, should have the right to let a soldier come in or not.

Fourth Amendment (from the book Bill of Right) :
In this Amendment it is said that no one may search, arrest, or take your property without a specific warrant. This amendment is important because without it people might try to get what is yours and claim that it is theirs.

How were the colonists able to defeat the greatest world power of their time?

By gaining confidence from the military, the French were able to defeat the greatest world power of their time (the British). To gain confidence/trust is an important factor this may help when it comes to war.
The french started to make their borders stronger and this helped them for any kind of attack. They were prepared for any situation.
Then the British started giving taxes. The colonies were not pleased by those new taxes. Stamp Act was what one of the new taxes the British made. The colonies were unwilling for all of this and brought delegates to come and gather in New York. They decided and convinced that all kind of tax could not come from the parliament, but from the legislatures.

Right of Self Determination

Right of Self Determination means the free choice of someones actions and this without any external compulsion. They have the right to decide how they will lead, how they will govern their country, but this without any influence from the other countries.
And this is a fundamental principle of human rights law, so you can see that this connects. They can freely pursue things such as economy, social, political, cultural, etc.

Information Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-determination, http://130.94.183.89/parker/selfdet.html

Popular Sovereignty

A popular sovereignty is a pre-Civil war for the right of the people in an organized territory and they decide by the vote of their legislature whether or not slavery would be permitted there or not.

Information source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/popular+sovereignty

Right Of Revolution

The right to overthrow a certain power such as government of kind. England's colonies overthrew their King because he was not fair.
They thought they deserved some human rights which were taken away more and more over time.
When they opened their eyes they realized that they could not live that way and so they started thinking about revolution and its rights.

Social Contract

A social contract is an agreement which people in the same organization or community share to define rights and duties each and everyone of them have. Social Contract Theory is a contract that the people of a given area agree upon to live by.

Natural Rights

Natural rights are rights that aren't contingent. Not contingent to the law, beliefs and/or customs. Natural rights are rights that are thought to be universal, completly different from legal rights because they are rights that culturally and politically relative. This also would mean for anyone could have the previlage of a freedom having to do with human's basic way of acting or living, such as owning a land or the right to marry anyone they want. In the Declaration of Independence, some rights say the following: "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
They are also said to be "rights which grow out of the nature of being a human". Natural rights are essential to human progress. Once these rights were violated by Great Britain and this conrtibuted to the American Revolution.

Why do people migrate to Morocco and away from Morocco?

People migrating to Morocco happen for a reason. Many historical events happened in Morocco that have a monument which represents that specific historical event/moment. Many people which are not Moroccan come to Morocco to visit these monuments and to know more about history. Many cities such as Marrakesh (known for having red buildings and walls), Essaouira ( known for their quality in fishing and for having blue and white buildings), Fes and many other cities.
Other reasons why people migrate to Morocco is for geographic reason. As we all know there aren't many countries with deserts and mountains. Morocco has both of them, the Sahara Desert and the Atlas mountains. The climate also plays a major part in migration because Morocco is a country which doesn't have that much of rain. There is usually a good amount of sunny days and some people rather be in the sun than in the ran all day.

Migration happens away from Morocco for reasons such as knowledge or work. Rich people ( people of high class ) want their children to finish their studies. Adults migrate to other countries to be able to get/obtain a good job and to earn money.

The way the French colonization influenced Morocco.

The French colonization helped us, Morocco, as well. When the French came to Morocco they did not just bring soldiers to fight, but they brought their culture, customs, religion, and languages. We started using their type of technology. Our country developed into a better country. Our understanding went further than just Morocco. People might think that this colonization was a negative impact, but i think it is a positive impact too.

About ESPERAT+G

ESPRATE+G means or represent Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Religion, Arts, Technology and Geography and this website has been created by Mr.Carpenter a American history teacher.
This website talks about how people make a living, how they (humans) behave, how each and everyone of them depends on someone or interact in a way with others, decision of who is the chief and what rules the chief gives his people, what are the peoples beliefs (religion) , how stories or ideas are passed from generation to generation, the arts people use to express their feelings such as their hobbies or their drawings, what are the tools people used in the past, and how differently people acted or lived in different environments.

Why should people study history?

It is important for people to study history because so that they do not make the same mistakes they made in the past. People say that "history repeats itself" and in some cases it is true in others it isn't, it is still important to be aware of the possible problems. Knowing about our past is to be able to know our ancestors and to know more about your culture, religion and customs. Without history people will not develop because people don't add to what they found. Lets take for example scientists, when they find something important they write it down into a lab report and give the opportunity for others to try i and be able to add something if possible. Then we they do the experiment they find out that something is wrong and they can change it. This is how they are adding to the discoveries of other scientist and this develops our lives and world.

Afghanistan's presidential election

President Hamid Karzai got 54.1%votes. Hamid Karzai avoids a runoff with his rival Abdullah. The 20th of august the elections were overshadowed.Abdullah ended up second with 28.3% of the votes. Unfortunatly Paktika and Kandahar two people from Ghazni found that there was evidene of irregularity with the polling stations. There for a recount will occur to make the voting fair.
The number of polling stations show a 100% for the president Hamid Karzai. BBC thinks that president Hamid Karzai will finish by being the victor.

Skills adults should know:

Any adult should know how to be patient and to expect anything to happen. An adult should never let anger take over because when someone gets angry he/she can't control his/her anger and make mistakes. Adults should always be reposible, they should becarful of things such and important papers or children and never complain when they have failed to be reponsible. They should always respect others. These are some of the things an adult should know how to do.

Why is a blog important?????

Blogs are technological ways to communicate with people throughout the world. In a way it is another type of resource that children or even adults can visite to discover new information. In a blog there is certain information that a person has learned and let us (readers) to be able to learn it too.

Most important reasons why students should blog:
1- Give someone else the ability to learn.
2- Provides a sort of notebook of all the information learned.
3- Saving of trees, meaning saving lives.
4- A sort of communication with other people about the subject and so this makes you and the person reading the blog think way beyond what is usually being thought about the subject.
5- Parents or teachers may read and understand what a student is learning throughout the year.

My Goals

My goals as a highschool student are :
1. Succeed in all my classes.
2. Easily being able to organize my time for homework.
